The Netflix Cup was a first of its kind in many ways. The broadcast was Netflix’s first-ever live sports event, in which Formula 1 drivers were paired with PGA tour golfers to compete in a unique golf scramble format. Additionally, the graphics package was unlike something the golf audience had yet to experience on live TV. The neon yellow and hot pink color palette set the tone right out of the gate!
The design language was clean and simple. The checkered pattern is commonly associated with Formula 1. Topography lines and shapes analogous to golf courses and the contours of F1 tracks were also utilized. Furthermore, both racing and golf share the use of a flag motif, as they are seen at the beginnings and ends of races and on every golf hole’s flagstick. These elements were the cornerstones of the package.
Once the design language was defined, the broadcast package quickly fell together. The twist was incorporating the four team colors into the package. Our solution was to lean into the commonly associated colors related to each driver’s F1 team. With a nod to team Ferrari, Sainz and Thomas were represented in red and yellow - Norris and Fowler outfitted in the McLaren orange and light blue and so on and so forth.
The insert package was in continual development leading right up to the day of the live broadcast due to Netflix never having live streamed anything like it before. Pairing a PGA tour golfer and Formula 1 driver together created a different set of rules. These different rules dictated that we approach the insert package under unconventional guidelines as well.
